Our Work

The Youth Jobs Strategy sets out the Tamanian Government’s approach to better connect and align the education, skills and employment systems and create the conditions for all young Tasmanians, regardless of their personal, social, or economic circumstances, to access the support and opportunities they need to lead happy, healthy and productive lives.

Through practical initiatives and action learning the strategy is delivering real outcomes for young people, our economy and Tasmanian communities. In the first phase of the strategy’s implementation, two priority projects are driving the strategy’s ambition to ensure that all young Tasmanians can access opportunities for employment in decent, meaningful work, and Tasmanian employers and industry can attract, develop, and retain skills young employees.

The Tasmanian Life, Learning and Work Framework

In developing the Youth Jobs Strategy, we heard that access to quality, consistent career guidance and support makes a huge difference in how successfully a young person navigates a pathway to work. But we also heard that many young Tasmanians aren’t getting the right support when and how they need it.

The Tasmanian Life, Learning and Work Framework (PDF 842.8 KB) provides a common language and simple, practical approach to career development support that empowers young Tasmanians and their families to know the minimum level of support they can expect, and where and how they can access it.

It focuses on the basics:

  • conversations to build personal awareness, develop life and work aspirations, identify short- and long-term goals
  • support to find and understand information that is accurate, timely and relevant to support pathway decisions and choices
  • connections to practical experiences, resources and networks to progress along the chosen pathway.

The draft Framework reflects what we have heard and learnt through research and consultation with key stakeholders involved in delivery of career services and support to young people. We are also engaging with young Tasmanians, including the Tasmanian Youth Voice Network, to refine and test the Framework’s use of language and ensure it delivers what young Tasmanians really want and need as they explore and navigate pathways to learning and work.

Draft Tasmanian Life, Learning and Work Framework

The Tasmanian Life, Learning and Work Framework ensures that all young people in Tasmania can access quality guidance and support to make decisions about learning and work.

Want to help us test how the Framework works in practice?

An Implementation Toolkit has been developed to help individuals and organisations test the Framework and explore how it can help them to support, guide and empower young people.

Use the survey questions to let us know what works, what could be improved, and what additional resources or tools might help you to use the Framework.

Demonstration Project – Incat Pilot

Our first Demonstration Project, in partnership with Tasmanian shipbuilder Incat, is developing and testing a practical model for creating smooth, connected pathways for young people into real jobs in a specific industry.

Working with local secondary schools, Regional Jobs Hubs, TasTAFE, Beacon Foundation and others, the pilot is examining how to better coordinate and sequence career guidance and exposure, practical work experience, and work readiness activities so that young people can explore career options, develop relevant skills and capabilities, and build connections to help them move into jobs in demand.

This first Demonstration Project is developing a model for a new way of working that reduces duplication, creates more visible, accessible pathways for young people, and activates a pipeline of skilled, work-ready young employees for industry. Learnings from the pilot will inform the development of practical resources that can be used to replicate the process and adapt to other industries, occupations and regions.

What we’re learning

  • A lot of what is needed for the pathway is already in place – with some small adjustments to better connect and sequence the activity a smoother, clearer pathway is already emerging.
  • Quality, consistency and alignment of school-based and post-school vocational education and training is generally good, but a specific skill gap has been identified – which we can now work to address.
  • Establishing intentional and documented partnerships is important – this helps ensure sustainability and accountability.

What’s next

A detailed model and method for the Demonstration Project is being developed and will include practical tools and resources to enable this way of working to be deployed in other industries, occupations and regions.
